Welcome
Welcome to the FMHS Teaching and Learning Community (TLC)!
The TLC aims to foster a collaborative space - physical and digital - for teachers to explore teaching problems and possibilities, exchange ideas about all aspects of learning and teaching so we can all learn from the experiences of each other and create new knowledge and practice in the faculty – all in a friendly and supportive environment.
We aim to meet twice a month. Topics of discussion will be determined by members and designed specifically to meet members’ needs (see schedule below).
Agreed norms
- Appropriately acknowledge the source of ideas
- Confidential and discreet
- Respect each other's contributions
- Shared/joint ownership; rotating organisational roles

Zoom Links to an external site. | Inclusive and collaborative curriculum design | Ashwini Datt with Department of Psychological Medicine team Psychiatry is a fundamental specialty that is typically taught in the latter part of the undergraduate medical programme. Covid and related lockdowns provided an impetus to review the psychiatry curriculum, its degree of integration with other specialties, mode of delivery and context in which it is taught and learnt. We present our findings from a scoping review of the curriculum transformation literature and focus groups involving students and in-depth interviews involving cohort tutors within the psychiatry programme. This curriculum review is timely as it integrates Taumata Teitei which underpins the University’s teaching and learning philosophy. Its focus is well aligned with the CFT Signature Pedagogical Practices. The findings from this presentation are not only relevant to psychiatry as a discipline but also other medical specialties and the wider University teaching and learning community. |

Experiences and learnings of using the Smartsims simulation tool ‘MikesBikes’ - Audrea Warner and Dr Joanne Mutter, UoA Business School Link to slides Download Link to slides Overview of this session: Simulations have been used in the University of Auckland Business School for over twenty years. This presentation will explore the benefits offered to students that other learning methods, for example traditional lectures or case discussions, do not offer. Students play a role within the simulation, rather than merely reading and analysing concepts and ideas. Students are able to synthesise and integrate what they read and then make decisions with consequences based on facts or data from the simulations, to consolidate and co-create a deeper understanding. The presentation will also focus on the student reactions to using the simulations, explore what the presenters have learnt as academics from using simulations in their courses. |

“What it means to be a Professional Teaching Fellow” with Dr. Julia Novak, Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning), Faculty of Science. The PTF role is still misunderstood by many and not treated consistently across the University, so how we fulfil the role tends to be up to us as individuals and is dependent upon the support that we receive from our department/school. In this session I plan to share some common misinformation about the PTF role, discuss the issues that we face and consider strategies for the future. My aim is for us to develop a common understanding of what it means it be a PTF and support each other in establishing PTFs as the leaders in teaching and learning.

The 'How To' of Graduate Profile Mapping with Professor Susan Geertshuis In this session, Professor Susan Geertshuis from the Business School, will share with FMHS colleagues some key graduate profile initiatives and resources that she and her learning and teaching team have been developing and implementing throughout the first half of this year. One of the aims during Semester One was to develop and disseminate a new School wide course template (and guide) which better maps course learning outcomes to graduate profile capabilities with the hope that this would make more explicit to our staff, students and employers what we hope to teach and develop in our students. Alongside this, the team also developed a Course Learning Outcome Tool, high-level rubrics, and a Learning and Teaching Mapping Guide to make this process as easy as possible for time poor academics in the School. Susan will share some of the achievements (and challenges!) experienced so far during the implementation phase of the graduate profile roll out.

Acknowledging indigenous values in our teaching. The recent SMS review highlighted a need to develop greater cultural awareness and improve progression and completion rates for our Māori and Pasifika students. Over the next two sessions, we explore the benefits for staff and students of Lalanga ha kaha’u monu’ia - embedding indigenous knowledge, values and culture for Māori and Pasifika student success. In this session Julie Wade (TKHM Cultural Liaison) and Sonia Fonua (2018 CLeaR Research Fellow) will outline some of the benefits of embedding values, culture and knowledge that speak to students in science-focused courses. They will also acknowledge the University’s Te Reo Māori policy, Vision Matauranga and introduce the pepeha as one way to build positive relationships between staff and students. |

The pepeha as a relationship-building tool: Building positive relationships enables student success. The pepeha is a way to introduce yourself in Māori by sharing information that will help to make connections with your audience. In a Māori setting, an important aspect of making connections is through whakapapa (ancestry). Preparing your pepeha: Come to this hands-on session to begin creating your own pepeha under the guidance of our team. Julie Wade, Sonia Fonua, Rachel Cameron, Leslie Schwarcz, Rachelle Singleton Bonus: In this short video (link Download linkPlay media comment.), we document how three FMHS staff members (Rachel Cameron, Leslie Schwarcz, Rachelle Singleton) explored developing their own pepeha. N.B. This is not an instructional video. Many thanks to Dennis Kerins for video editing. |

Achieving consistency across courses in a programme Presenters: Shelley Park and Adrienne Young Recent teaching and learning sessions have presented student feedback from across the university indicating that inconsistency of course structure in Canvas is one of the major areas of student dissatisfaction. In this session we present the medical imaging approach to structuring courses on Canvas in an attempt to achieve consistency and a better student experience. |

What makes a good clinical portfolio? Presenters: Beau Pontré and Shelley Park While portfolios are used, and indeed required, in a variety of disciplines to collate student work and document progress, there isn’t likely a one-size-fits-all solution. That was certainly the experience we had when setting up the clinical portfolios for our postgraduate medical imaging programmes. After implementing a custom-built solution using Google Apps, the faculty introduced Chalk and Wire. In this session, we will share our experiences using both of these platforms with the intent to start a discussion about portfolio use in different programmes around the Faculty. |

Can ‘contract marking’ work in our teaching? Janine Wiles reports and reflects on applying the concept of ‘unilateral contract grading’ in a post-graduate methodology course. Contract grading involves setting out a clear set of criteria which students must meet to achieve an agreed grade. If they meet the criteria, specified work is then eligible to be considered for a higher grade. Contract grading emphasises the process of learning, encouraging strong students to take risks and clearly explaining to all students what learning processes are seen as important. |

Using PeerWise as a summative assessment tool Presenters: Adrienne Young and Beau Pontré PeerWise is a collaborative online tool where students can create, respond to, and comment on multiple choice questions. Tools like this are often used in a formative fashion to supplement student learning through other means. In the postgraduate medical imaging programmes, we have been trialling PeerWise as a summative assessment tool. In this session we will share our experience with using PeerWise for assessment and discuss the various strategies we have tried in an attempt to create a robust assessment tool. |

How can Journal Ranking and Citation Metrics guide our appraisal of quality literature? Presenters: Rhonda-Joy Sweeney, Fran Clements and Catherine Lyman, Heather Gunn Is it sufficient to just instruct students to use “peer-reviewed” journal articles in their written assignments? An understanding of journal ranking and citation metrics can inform us of the quality of sources we provide to our students. Therefore, this same understanding might assist students in satisfying assessment requirements to demonstrate full critical awareness of the status of their supporting sources. |
