As mentioned, there are also some tips on Inclusive Learning (IL) teaching practices available on IL’s website. Seems like there was quite an appetite to learn more about IL! If you feel staff would benefit from one of our IL Advisers attending a future PD session, do let me know in advance as their workloads are quite full

Student Centre is based at Grafton campus in Building 503-023, and at Tamaki (for 2019) in Building 730.
The Student Centre is available to assist both prospective and current students to discuss the various FMHS programmes and pathways, assist with enrolment issues, and to offer non-academic services. Part of the non-academic services we offer includes the Student Support Advisors and for FMHS they are Daniel Heke (Undergraduate), Morgan Butler (Postgraduate), and Serena Liang (BHSc).
Daniel, Morgan and Serena are available to assist students with issues they may be having to provide a non-bias and neutral contact to navigate the support systems that exist. In short, they are not counsellors or medical professionals, but rather advocates who offer pastoral care and act as a conduit/referral to the specialised support systems in and across the University. Their roles can vary depending on the needs of their cohorts, but it includes;
- supporting and directing students to the support networks or services available;
- arranging the Deans Forum (one per semester) to allow student representatives to discuss issues directly with the Dean and enable open and honest communication channels;
- assist with organising orientation welcome events for various programmes and/or cohorts across the faculty;
- coordinate the Grafton Clubs Expo (Friday 8th March) with Campus Life and the various clubs/society reps;
- communicate with Board of Examiner meetings to be aware of potential at-risk students;
- work closely with the International Office to be aware of international student issues (i.e. visas);
- recruitment of student tutors to assist international students - whilst this has been predominantly for MBChB in the past, we are trialling this across additional programs in 2019 as international student numbers grow, to try and assist with some of their unique issues;
- assist with ensuring students with learning needs are aware of the support available through disability services and/or working with school academic staff to ensure a support plan is in place;
- promote the FMHS Rainbow network and arrange events (work in progress).
For your current forum ‘There is a student who may need assistance’ the main take away for your staff should be that the SSA’s are a first point of contact for both students and staff if you have a student who you think requires some type of non-academic support. The SSA’s are not counsellors, but are neutral staff members who will maintain confidentiality and are available to meet with in person, or via phone/email, to provide pastoral care, referrals and support to current students.
We can be contacted on fmhssupport@auckland.ac.nz and our colleagues in MAPAS on mapas@auckland.ac.nz.
