Description:
This course is the continuation of CHINESE 100. It continues to provide basic written and spoken skills in modern standard Chinese (Mandarin, Putonghua, Guoyu, Hanyu) for true beginners. This course trains students in all four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It aims to provide Chinese learners with a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills. This course continues to use the two textbooks from CHINESE 100 and covers Chapter 9-15. By the end of the course, students are expected to know about 700 vocabulary items; to communicate orally in Chinese on daily life; to have a solid foundation on the grammatical constructions for more advanced study; and to write about 400 characters.
All students who have enrolled in this course for the first time must submit a Language Ability Declaration. If you already speak some Mandarin or other Chinese dialects/languages, and/or have received previous education in written Chinese, please see the course coordinator immediately unless you were interviewed. Per conditions of your Language Ability Declaration, if we subsequently discover that you have not been completely forthcoming with us with regard to your language ability and/or previous exposure to written and/or spoken Chinese, the University may cancel your enrolment in language courses at any time in the semester, regardless of how late in the semester it may happen to be. Misrepresentation of prior study is considered academic misconduct, and it may result in having a record in the University Register of Academic Misconduct, or being referred to the Discipline Committee.
Class contact hours: 5 tutorials a week
Workload:
The University of Auckland expects students to spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course. You should manage your academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Aside from 5 hours of tutorials per week, you are expected to spend about 5 hours a week to study outside the classroom.
