Summary of Course Description              

This course is for those who have passed JAPANESE 131 or who have achieved at least 16 points in Level 3 NCEA Japanese (or equivalent).  The course aims to further develop the basic proficiency in modern Japanese necessary to communicate in everyday-life situations.  As with JAPANESE 131, this course provides a range of exercises and activities to develop communicative use of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in various situations as well as strategies to enhance and support these skills. The prescribed textbook can be obtained from the University Bookshop.  Students must attend the plenary lecture plus streamed classes.

 

Course outcomes

By the end of the course, you should have improved your ability to:

  • orally communicate in various situations using learned expressions and grammatical patterns in a socially appropriate form (e.g. plain, polite and some forms of honorific forms).
  • read and understand passages written in various topics and styles using learned expressions and grammatical patterns.
  • write a short essay on a set topic commensurate with the level of this course following a suggested format.
  • translate short passages from Japanese into English and vice versa accurately.

 Genki II: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese 2nd Edition (textbook and workbook)

 

Workload:

As with other 15-point courses, the University of Auckland’s expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on this course. You should manage your academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Students attend a one-hour lecture on Tuesday and a one-hour tutorial on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week.  Students are expected to learn new vocabulary and kanji, and look over scheduled activities prior to the lesson being taught.
