Summary of Course Description:              

Koreans use “easy-to-learn” Korean alphabet. Learning Korean as a foreign or second language is becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand as well as overseas.

This course aims to introduce beginners to basic spoken and written skills in modern Korean. By the end of the course, successful students will be able to carry out a conversation on simple topics of daily life, to comprehend simple Korean texts and to write about their own everyday life at a basic level. Students must attend the lecture plus the streamed classes. This entails four class hours per week.

•    Reading and writing the Korean alphabet –consonants, vowels and syllable blocks
•    Greetings and introducing yourself and your friends
•    Asking questions
•    Comparing items
•    Negative expressions
•    Changing topics
•    Asking alternative questions
•    Talking about your daily routine
•    Making requests
•    Talking about your family and others’ families
•    Asking about locations - in and around the house, university and town
•    Expressing possessive relations
•    Talking about activities on days of a week
•    Expressing the purpose of your action

 Course outcomes:

A student who successfully completes this course will have the opportunity to:

• understand and carry out a conversation on simple topics of daily-life and

• comprehend simple Korean texts and to write about their own everyday life at a basic level.

 Assessment Summary:

Weighting of coursework and due dates:

     20% Aural/Written test      

       8% Conversation test 1        

     10% Conversation test 2

     12% Presentation               

     50% exam

Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.
