Summary of Course Description:

This course provides an overview / description of the English language. We will focus on three main sections: 1. the grammar of the language (grammar); 2. the sounds that make up the language (phonology); and 3. the lexicon or vocabulary of the language (lexis). The course aims to help students understand the patterns in each of these aspects of the language and how they function as a system. It is designed primarily for (intending) language teachers; course content will therefore focus on the type of knowledge that is useful for language teachers/learners and on the types of difficulties that the English language presents for learners. It is anticipated that this knowledge will help teachers to teach and explain aspects of the English language to their students of English as an additional language.

The lectures present content and a weekly tutorial (Weeks 2 to 11) gives students the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the analysis of features of the language. The work covered in lectures and tutorials prepares students for the type of knowledge and skills that they are required to demonstrate in course assessments.

Course outcomes:

The course aims to:

  • develop an understanding of how the grammar, sound systems and vocabulary function in written and spoken English
  • give students skills to analyse these systems formally
  • highlight those aspects of these systems which are of particular relevance to the
    second/foreign language teacher/learner
  • familiarise students with relevant sources and resources.

Ballard, K. (2013). The Frameworks of English: Introducing language structures. 3rd edition.
Houndsmill, New York: Palgrave Macmillan.

This text is available at the University of Auckland bookshop.  It is also accessible through the library catalogue as an e-book, and two copies are available for loan.  The 2007 edition is also available for loan, and is equally as useful as the 3rd (2013) edition.

Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.
