  • Prerequisites: FRENCH 204.

  • Restrictions: May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed.

  • Course aims & objectives: Features of the French language will be presented, in French, and practised in the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing; by the end of the course, in order to obtain a pass grade, students will be able, in French, to: (i) demonstrate a competent working knowledge of vocabulary, language structures, and cultural content covered both in Alter Ego 4 weekly topics and supplementary documents studied; (ii) present a sustained oral and written argument, write a biography, and produce an administrative letter as well as a covering letter & CV; (iii) demonstrate overall language proficiency equivalent to DELF B2.

  • Weekly topics: Units 1, 2, 4, 5 of Alter Ego 4 (textbook details below); unit list subject to change.

  • Teaching format4 weekly 1-hour classes (on campus), supplemented by online multimedia work.

  • Workload: Students are expected to spend around 10 hours a week on the course over 15 weeks on the course (i.e. teaching, study break and examination weeks); for an average student, the overall course workload breakdown could be as follows: 44 hours taught classes and tests; 10 hours online multimedia work; 48-54 hours class preparation and test revisions; 16-18 hours written assignments; 25-30 hours final exam preparation.

  • Assessment weightings: 60% coursework, 40% final exam (two hours, closed book).

  • Assessment breakdown: Coursework includes both written and online assignments (30% weightage) as well as oral production work (15% weightage) and an oral comprehension test (15% weightage).
