Summary of Course Description:              

The course is developed mainly for pre-service English language teachers. The main aims of this course are:

  1. to help student teachers to develop an understanding of the procedures, techniques and options used in teaching language lessons
  1. to help student teachers to design and deliver effective language lessons for a variety of contexts or learner groups
  1. to introduce student teachers to a variety of tools for teacher development such as peer teaching, peer observation, and reflective teaching

 

Course teaching format

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, group discussions and group demonstrations in class. Students are also required to arrange meetings in small groups with the lecturer for assignments. Students are required to participate in all classes. Some sessions are compulsory (They will be clearly indicated in the course outline). Students are also expected to check announcements on Canvas, view and participate in online discussion forums on Canvas or Coursebuilder/Flexible Learning as appropriate.

 

Assessment

Assessment in this course is a series of activities and tasks related to practical language teaching. Those activities could help you with your future career as a language teacher.

 

Class limits information for 2018

 

Enrolment is limited to 33 students. Priority will be given to students who need the course to complete their degree, and then to others on a first in, first enrolled basis.

Prerequisites:

LANGTCHG 300 or 301 and approval of Academic Head or nominee or enrolment in BEd (TESOL).

 Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.
