These awards are intended to promote an open, active and reflective approach to teaching and learning within the Faculty of Science. The faculty will make up to three awards to individuals or teaching teams each year:

Sustained Excellence in Teaching
Early Career Excellence in Teaching
Leadership in Teaching

In a particular year, if an award is not made in one or more of the categories, an award may be re- assigned to another category if the next best ranked application in that category is of sufficient merit. The awards will be contestable across the Faculty of Science and carry with them a monetary prize to the value of $5000.

2023 recipients

Early Career: Ofer Marmur (Department of Mathematics)

For teaching excellence in reflective, student-centred practice, commitment to equity, and use of research-informed teaching practice to make mathematics accessible and relevant.

Sustained: Sonia Fonua (School of Environment)

For teaching excellence through sustained commitment to improving student success and outcomes for all students through values-based teaching practice.

2022 recipients

Dr Emma Sharp (School of Environment) for Early Career Excellence in Teaching
- For teaching excellence through innovative, inclusive and engaging teaching practice, with active and respectful engagement with Te Ao Māori.
Mr Tristan O’Hanlon (Department of Physics) for Sustained Excellence in Teaching
- For teaching excellence in engaging, research-informed teaching and commitment to the teaching community.

2021 recipients

Associate Professor Miro Erkintalo (Physics) - Sustained Excellence in Teaching.
- For deliberate, responsive, student-centred teaching practices and maintaining high quality and equitable teaching practices in Physics.
Dr Jessica Maxwell (Psychology) - Early Career Excellence in Teaching.
- For engaging, inspiring and effective teaching that impacts both students and colleagues through creative and passionate practice.
Dr Christopher Erb (Psychology) - Early Career Excellence in Teaching.
- For creative teaching that supports students to reflect and develop holistically, and for demonstrating leadership in Academic Integrity in Psychology.

2020 recipients

Professor Richard Easther (Physics) – Leadership
- For outstanding leadership and advocacy for Science, development of the Science Scholars programme for students who are passionate about Science, establishing research informed teaching practices, and commitment to equity.
Associate Professor Kerry Gibson (Psychology) – Leadership
- For sustained high quality teaching and supervision, commitment to equity, and leadership in student wellbeing across the Faculty of Science.
Dr David Moreau (Psychology) - Early Career
- For dedicated and thoughtful reflective practice in the development and delivery of Psychology courses, student-centred teaching, and engagement with Māori.
