Overview

The Te herenga Auaha | Faculty of Engineering and Design Teaching Development Fund is intended to:

Support continuous improvement in teaching and learning through the development and financial support of leaders (or emergent leaders) in the disciplines that are relevant to the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Foster ongoing development of high quality and evidence-informed tertiary teaching and learning in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Support teaching staff to engage in furthering professional development in evidence-informed teaching and learning approaches.
Foster collaboration and collective capacity-building amongst teachers in the Faculty.
Support engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning in the Faculty of Engineering and Design, and more widely.

Successful applications will be added to our Faculty Learning and Teaching Hub to inspire others to try out different ideas. Receiving a FoED Teaching Development Fund is valuable evidence of teaching excellence that you can include in continuation and promotion applications.

Value of the Fund

A maximum of $5,000 funding is available for a single award.
The total funding pool is $10,000 per annum, and the awards are made to one or more eligible applicants. Multiple awards may be made in a single year, up to an aggregate of $10,000 per round.

Eligibility

All faculty academic staff who have a teaching role are eligible to receive the fund. Non-academic staff who have a teaching role may be included in a team application.

An applicant who is employed on a fixed-term contract may apply with the explicit endorsement of their HoD/HoS/HoP (this needs to be acknowledged in the application form).

Criteria for the Fund

Applications must be aligned with:

One or more of the University of Auckland TeachWell Framework capabilities.
One or more of the University of Auckland’s Taumata Teitei priorities for Education and Student Experience, i.e. support accessible and equitable higher education opportunities; focus on a student-centric culture; be research-informed, transdisciplinary and relevant; and be current and fit-for-purpose.

Recommended themes for 2025 (your application may address one or more of the following):

Employability
Sustainability
Transdisciplinarity - collaborate with or include other Faculties/disciplines

Conditions of the Fund

Recipients will be required to:

Showcase their projects at Faculty Teaching and Learning Seminars.
Disseminate project outcomes as, for example, departmental guidelines, technical reports, source code available on GitHub, publication of conference papers (e.g., at AAEE Conference, ASA/ANZASCA Conference) or journal articles, grant applications, case studies on TeachWell Digital, or mentorship of other teachers.
Provide interim progress updates to the ADTL.
Provide a final report to the ADTL.

Selection Process

Priority will be given to applicants who do not have access to other potential funding streams.
It is recommended that applicants consult with RAA about their project proposal.
In the spirit of fostering collaboration and building collective capacities, members of a teaching team/unit may apply as a team (teams can include non-academic staff).
A Teaching Development Fund commitee (a sub-commitee of the Faculty TLQC) will consider the grant applications and will make a recommendation to the ADTL.
The Teaching Development Fund commitee will have responsibility and discretion for judging the applications against the grant selection criteria as well as for determining the recipient(s) and allocation(s) of the annual grant.
The Teaching Development Fund commitee will consist of the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, or nominee, with three other panel members including one Head of Department, or nominee, and one teaching staff member from a different department (i.e. minimum of 4 people). Commitee members will be rotated annually by invitation across departments. The ADTL will invite members each year to the selection panel to ensure no conflicts of interest occur in relation to the year’s applications.
