 Second Language Acquisition

SEMESTER 2, 2018

15 points

Teacher: Rob Batstone

Course Aims and Objectives

The main aim of this course is to introduce you to key ideas and concepts in SLA. As such, it is not a course where second language teaching is central. However, the topics which the course covers have been selected not only for their importance in the field of SLA research, but also for their potential relevance for language teachers. This the objectives of the course include the following:

To help participants to understand defining concepts and key ideas in SLA research through the provision of readings and tasks in each unit

To encourage participants to reflect on these concepts and key ideas and – through the tasks assigned to each unit - to identify how they are illustrated in particular contexts

To critically consider how aspects of SLA research are (or are not) potentially relevant for second language teaching
