CHINESE 740: Chinese Teaching Pedagogy

Course Description 

This course critically investigates the pedagogical content knowledge for teaching Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). Designed to give students research-based information on ways to develop a pedagogical model that is suited to teaching Chinese in five key areas: phonetics, characters, grammar, discourse and culture. Students will have opportunities to explore different strategies for engaging learners in Chinese language classrooms in schools, universities and communities. Students will have plenty of opportunities to explore different strategies for teaching and engaging students in learning the language. In the end, the course will introduce the common standards for curriculum development, proficiency test and teacher education. Reading materials will be provided by the course coordinator in class.

 

Course Learning Outcomes        

On completion of this course, students are expected to: (1) gain a deeper understanding of major pedagogical skills in teaching Chinese as a second language; and (2) demonstrate proficient knowledge of teaching methods in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

 

Assessment:  100% Coursework

  • Quiz: 10%: Students will be evaluated on their understanding of language teaching approaches.
  • Presentation: 20%: Individual teaching demonstration.
  • Discussion: 30%: Peer review and feedback. Reflect and write a report.
  • Essay: 40%: Students will write a research paper to examine teaching practices.
