FRENCH 203: Intermediate French Language 1

  • Restrictions: May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed.

  • Summary of Course Description:              

    This is a four-skill language course, using the same methodology and text as FRENCH 101 and 102. It is designed for students with 12-16 credits in Level 3 NCEA French, or who have passed FRENCH 102, 152 or 162. It is not available to students who qualify for entry into FRENCH 204 or above.

  • Course aims & objectives: Features of the French language will be presented, in French, and practised in the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing; by the end of the course, in order to obtain a pass grade, students must demonstrate an overall command of both oral and written French equivalent to DELF A2/B1 language competency on topics covered in class. By the end of the course, students obtaining a pass grade will demonstrate a competent working knowledge of language topics up to and including chapter 14 in Deux Mondes.

  • Weekly topics: Chapters 11-14 inclusive of Deux Mondes, A Communicative Approach (textbook details below), film study of Le Chemin du retour.

  • Teaching format: two weekly 90mn class sessions (on campus), blended with online multimedia learning.

  • Workload: Students are expected to spend around 10 hours a week over 15 weeks on the course (i.e. teaching, study break, and examination weeks); for an average student, the overall course workload breakdown could be as follows: 33 hours on-campus taught classes and 10-12 hours revisions; 44-46 hours online multimedia learning; 25-30 hours assignment work; 10-12 hours test revisions; 20-24 hours final exam preparation.

  • Provisional class limits information for 2018: Enrolment in Semester One is limited to 70 students with selection based on: 1) pass in FRENCH 102 or Language Ability Declaration and concession; 2) first in, first enrolled.
