This course is an introduction to the structure of the Japanese language for intermediate students of the Japanese language. It covers such topics as pronunciation, phonological structure, the Japanese writing system, word classes, morphology and grammatical topics, focusing on providing a structural analysis of points already covered at different stages of first and second year Japanese from a linguistic point of view and providing the knowledge necessary to work out novel forms when encountered.

Lectures: Monday 2-4 pm in 253-101; Thur 2-4 pm in 253-101

Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% final examination

Test 1 (15%): 19 August (in class)

Test 2 (15%): 3 October (in class)

Assignment 1 (10%): due 4 pm, 28 Wednesday August

Assignment 2 (10%): due 4 pm, 9 Wednesday October
