The place for lectures - on video or live
Lectures can:
- Provide information that is new, based on original research, and generally not found in textbook and other printed sources
- Highlight similarities and differences between key concepts
- Help communicate the enthusiasm of teachers for their subjects
- Model how a particular discipline deals with questions of evidence, critical analysis, problem solving and the like
- Dramatise importance concepts and share personal insights
- Organise subject matter in a way that is best suited to a particular class or course objectives
Cashin (1985)
Be clear about why you choose to lecture:
- To establish the broad outlines of a body of material?
- To set guidelines for independent study?
- To model the intellectual attitudes you hope to encourage in students?
- To encourage learners' interest in a topic?
- To set the moral culture for discussions?
