The place for lectures - on video or live

Lectures can:

  • Provide information that is new, based on original research, and generally not found in textbook and other printed sources
  • Highlight similarities and differences between key concepts
  • Help communicate the enthusiasm of teachers for their subjects
  • Model how a particular discipline deals with questions of evidence, critical analysis, problem solving and the like
  • Dramatise importance concepts and share personal insights
  • Organise subject matter in a way that is best suited to a particular class or course objectives

Cashin (1985)

Be clear about why you choose to lecture:

  • To establish the broad outlines of a body of material?
  • To set guidelines for independent study?
  • To model the intellectual attitudes you hope to encourage in students?
  • To encourage learners' interest in a topic?
  • To set the moral culture for discussions?
