Design for learning - overview
DRAFT
"Design" is the first of the five stages of teaching well at university according to our TeachWell@UoA framework.
We design for learning by planning and preparing a) learning tasks and b) a learning environment.
The process of designing for learning has three main steps:
The course content is planned, developed and integrated during each of these steps.
The TeachWell@UoA framework lists four core capabilities for a university teacher within the "Design" stage:
-
-
- Develop intended learning outcomes
- Teach inclusively; attend to diverse student groups, including prior knowledge and experience
- Design for active learning (blended, face-to-face and online)
- Align learning outcomes with learning tasks and assessment (backwards design or constructive alignment)
-
This module provides guidance on each of these four core capabilities.
There is also information on
-
-
- software tools for learning and teaching (online, blended and in-class),
- templates, tools and frameworks for learning design and course design, and
- similarities between the learning design process and engineering design.
