Overview: Thesis proposals
Purpose of a thesis proposal
When you’re new to a research project, writing a thesis proposal can feel like a daunting task. However, this is a critical document to help you plan out your research and give you the best chance of success.
Why do I need to write a thesis proposal?
- Clarify your thinking
- Review the literature in your area to find out where the gaps are
- Create a plan to help focus your research project
- Develop your written communication skills and highlight any areas for improvement
- Practice ‘real world’ skills e.g. applying for research grants, scholarships or travel grants, etc.
- Get feedback early on
- Check the project is doable in the time allocated and with the resources available
- Determine if the methodology is appropriate and valid
- Provide the basis for the introduction, literature review and methods sections of your thesis
- Check that the research is worth doing and the project will meet the criteria for a masters or PhD
