CLASSICS 130:  Love and Death in Greek and Roman Literature

Information and Course Schedule

In this course, we study the themes of love and death in a selection of some of the best known literary works from ancient Greece and Rome, exemplifying a variety of literary genres including Comedy, Lyric, Elegiac and Epic Poetry, and Philosophy.

All students are expected to purchase one prescribed text: Plautus, The Pot of Gold and Other Plays, transl. by E.F. Watling (Penguin Books). Note that this will be needed from the very beginning of the course. (Other texts will be available electronically through Canvas.)

Lecture Times: Tuesday 12:00-1:00; Thursday 4:00-5:00

Tutorials:  Topics are listed in the schedule (link below). You will get the most benefit if you do a small amount of preparation before the tutorial: advice on preparation, including some questions to think about, will be issued one week ahead.

Coursework:   One short assignment  for 10% (500 words), due in your tutorial in Week 5;

                        One essay for 30% (approx. 1500-2000 words), due on Monday 26th September (submit with cover sheet at the Reception Desk on Level 3 of Arts 1).
