Course Description       

This course introduces a research-based account of how to teach Chinese as a foreign language and gives students detailed information on ways to develop a pedagogical model that is suited to teaching Chinese in five key areas: phonetics, characters, grammar, discourse and culture. In addition, students will have plenty of opportunities to explore different strategies for teaching and engaging students in learning the language. In the end, the course will introduce the common standards for curriculum development, proficiency test and teacher education. Reading materials will be provided by the course coordinator in class.

 

Course Learning Outcomes        

On completion of this course, students are expected to: (1) gain a deeper understanding of major aspects in teaching Chinese as a foreign language; and (2) demonstrate proficient knowledge of teaching methods and pedagogical development in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. 

 

Assessment:  100% Coursework

  • Discussion and debate: 30%
  • Presentation: 30%
  • Research essay: 40%
