Description: This course provides an overview of the major developments in contemporary Italian theatre, from the innovations of the Futurists, the "grottesco", and Pirandello at the beginning of the XXth century to the provocations of feminist playwrights and narrative theatre in the last few years. A close reading of representative plays is accompanied by the discussion of the taped staging of some of them.

The class has a two-hour lecture and a tutorial. 

Regular attendance, reading of the prescribed primary and secondary texts, and contribution to the tutorials are expected.

This class is in Italian.

 

Assessment: 

2 essays:                                   30% each

2 tests:                                     10% each

Contribution to tutorials:             20%

 

Essays will be about 2000 word long and will consist of a critical analysis of one or more of the plays discussed in class. They will integrate a close reading of the chosen play(s) with reading of relevant secondary sources.

Essay 1 is due on Monday 25 September 2017 (though Turnitin)

Essay 2 is due on Monday 6 November 2017 (through Turnitin)

Tests will verify the students' comprehension of all the plays discussed in the course.

Test 1 will take place on Tuesday 19 September 2017.

Test 2 will take place on Thursday 26 October 2017 (first hour of class).

Tutorials will be in Italian. Students are expected to bring to the tutorial a one-page typed reflection/analysis on the play to be discussed and/or to prepare a summary of a critical essay to present to the group. Students will have one chance per semester to hand in their reflection should they not be able to attend a tutorial. (Medical certificates will of course be considered).
