JAPANESE 131

Japanese Language 1B

Semester 2, 2017

 

Welcome to Japanese Language 1B. This integrated course is for those who have passed JAPANESE 130 or who have achieved NCEA Level 2 or equivalent in Japanese. The course aims to further develop basic proficiency in modern Japanese necessary to communicate in limited situations. Those who have achieved NCEA Level 3 or equivalent MAY NOT* (see below) in principle enrol in this course.

 

The course will use a range of exercises and activities to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as strategies to enhance and support these skills, including various types of self-paced exercises available on Cecil. The course will also introduce some socio-cultural aspects related to language-use situations.

 

IMPORTANT  NOTE:

* If you have not taken JAPANESE 130, you should have submitted a Language Ability Declaration in which you declared your formal and informal exposure to learning this language in the past.

If it is discovered later that there are discrepancies between your actual language competency and your experience as declared in the Language Ability Declaration, you may be disqualified from the course.

Prescribed Course Textbook

GENKI I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese.  2nd edition The Japan Times (Textbook and Workbook)

The prescribed course textbook can be obtained from the University Bookshop as a student package.

 

Meeting Times and Classrooms

The course consists of one plenary lecture plus three tutorials per week.

Please check with SSO to confirm the location of lecture/tutorials for the first few weeks as there are often room-changes during these periods.

 

 Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to build a solid foundation in Japanese grammar while developing communicative skills in Japanese. Classroom activities and homework assignments are designed to help students achieve a practical command of the language. At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. talk about a sequence of events, describe events in progress, describe personal characteristics, report on what one has heard, make comparisons, express desires, talk about past experiences, etc.
  2. read and write simple passages (e.g. letter, diary entry, report, and folk tale) using 145 kanji

 We will cover Lessons 7 to 12 in GENKI I.  Please see the class schedule appended at the end of this document. 

 

 Assessment

Coursework (50%)

 3 Short Tests (16%)

You will be tested on your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar as well as kanji in these tests.

 Mid-Semester Test (20%) 

The mid-semester test will assess your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar as well as reading, writing and listening skills learned in Lessons 7, 8 and 9.

 Speaking Test (14%) 

You will be tested on your speaking skills. Further information about these tests will be announced during lectures.

Final Exam (50%)

Your reading, writing, listening and grammar knowledge will be assessed in a two-hour final examination in a format similar to the Mid-Semester Test. The material in the final examination will cover Lessons 7 to 12.

 

Policy on Attendance

Attendance at lectures and tutorials is a compulsory component of this course, and a lecture/tutorial-attendance rate of less than 80% will mean that the course requirements have not been met, and your final grade will be DNC (Did Not Complete) regardless of what marks were earned in coursework and the final examination.
