WELCOME TO  LANGTCHG 306 USING TASKS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING for Semester 1 2017

Course description
This course introduces some fundamental issues in task-based language teaching and provides opportunities for hands-on practice in developing effective classroom tasks. The course also seeks to enhance students’ understanding of the distinction between task-based teaching and traditional approaches and discuss viable ways of incorporating the two to achieve maximal instructional effect.

The aims of the course are:
 - to understand what a task is and how lessons can be developed around tasks
 - to explore task-based teaching for different language skills
 - to understand the role of explicit language teaching, assessment, and syllabus design in a task-based context

Lectures: There is one 2-hour lecture per week: Tuesday 9am-11am.     No tutorials.
Location: 201E-704 (Human Sciences - East,Rm 704) [check on SSO just before the first lecture]
Lecturer and Course Coordinator: Lizzy Roe         email: l.roe@auckland.ac.nz

Lectures  include a practical component whereby students work in pairs or small groups on tasks. This is because a central aim of the course is for students to understand and be able to design a task appropriate for a language classroom. The lectures are not recorded so students are expected to attend all lectures and to take an active part in the practical component. Attendance is noted.

The university expects students to spend 10 hours per week study time for this course. This includes reading course materials, attending lectures, and preparing for assignments.  Students must check that their Canvas settings let them receive notifications from Canvas immediately.

Required Textbook (available for purchase at the UBS bookshop on campus)
