Course syllabus

Kia ora koutou and a very warm welcome.

You've reached the course syllabus page for Sociol 322: A Sociology of Relational Life (15 points)

Couse Description
The course introduces you to recent developments in the sociology of relational and personal live. It invites you to participate in an examination of the personal and social significance of our relationships to others – for example, our parents, intimate partners, friends, acquaintances, and even pets – in an era that is said to be increasingly individualised and detraditionalised. We will consider the ways our connections to others are embedded in life through everyday practices, telling stories and sharing photographs. Throughout the course a number of themes will be emphasised: the tension between our individualised and relational lives; the similarities and differences in the binding power of biological versus social ties; new relational forms; the importance of our relational lives to our identities; the pleasure and pain of relational lives; and the social, cultural and legal regulation of our relational lives.
