  • Course name: Language Acquisition I.
  • Course code: FRENCH 702.

  • Prerequisites: FRENCH 305 or placement test and approval of Academic Head or nominee.

  • Course aims & objectives: Features of the French language will be presented, in French, and practised in the four skills areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing; by the end of the course, in order to obtain a pass grade, students must demonstrate an overall command of both oral and written French equivalent to DALF C1 language competency on topics covered in class.

  • Weekly topics: Units 2, 4, 5, and 8 of Alter Ego 5 (textbook details below).

  • Teaching format: One weekly 2-hour class (on campus), supplemented by online multimedia assignments. 

  • Workload: Students are expected to spend around 10 hours a week on the course over the 12 weeks of teaching; for an average student, the overall course workload breakdown could be as follows: 24 hours taught classes and tests; 18 hours online multimedia work; 33-38 hours class preparation; 15-18 hours written assignments; 20-25 hours test revisions.

  • Assessment breakdown: Coursework includes both written and online multimedia assignments (weighted 30%), oral classwork (weighted 30%), as well as final oral and written tests (weighted 40%).
