Developing Literacy in a Second Language

Summary of Course Description:              

This course introduces students to concepts relating to literacy development, including academic literacy and methods for instruction to foster the development of L2 reading and writing.

2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of tutorial

Course outcomes:

The aims of the course are to enable students to 

  • Understand processes and theories involved in L2 literacy development.
  • Develop understanding of the teaching of L2 literacy including academic writing, reading, vocabulary and assessment.

 Assessment Summary:

40% written assignment   (in week 6)

40% written assignment  (in week 11)

20% test               (in final week of lectures)

Prescribed Texts:

Weekly readings are provided on Canvas. Students are not required to purchase a textbook. 

 Recommended Texts:

A list of recommended readings will be provided for each written assignment. These readings will be available on Canvas. 

 Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.
