Description

Course aims/outcomes:

This course aims to develop a critical understanding of principles and practices of teaching a second/foreign language in various contexts with a particular focus on teaching language systems and skills. By the end of this course students will be able to

  1. describe principles involved in teaching language systems and skills
  2. explain the rationale behind language teaching activities and tasks
  3. develop a critical awareness of various language teaching practices and theories proposed in the field of language teaching

Course teaching format

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, group discussions and group presentations in class. In addition to regular participation in all classes, students are required to arrange meetings in small groups with the lecturer for their presentations.

Assessment

Assessment in this course is a series of activities and tasks related to various aspects of language teaching (socio-cultural, cognitive and affective aspects). Those activities could help not only with your future career as a language teacher but also with some presentation skills - transferrable to not just teaching but also non-teaching related tasks.

Assignment 1 (Course work): A critique on language teaching practices with reference to socio-cultural perspectives.

Assignment 2 (Coursework): Applying a particular set of principles (theory) to practice (focusing mainly on affective aspects – e.g. how to enhance student interest in language learning)

Assignment 3 (Group projects and presentations, focusing on cognitive, sociocultural and affective aspects of language teaching)

Assignment 4: Participation (Regular on-going assessment in the form of forums, focusing on both practical and theoretical issues covered in lectures).

LANGTCHG 300: 15.0 points

Prerequisites

LANGTCHG 101 or 202 or 30 points passed at Stage II or above or approval of Academic Head or nominee
