Course syllabus

Māori 190 or previous kapa haka experience. This course is significantly performance based. Students will be expected to attend all classes and to participate in the practical elements of the course. Due to the ‘group’ performance aspect – students who miss a class will be expected to catch up in their own time.

Aims of the course:

This course examines a selection of traditional and contemporary Māori performing arts and covers a range of kapa haka performance. While there is an emphasis on developing performance skills, there is also a research component that will require students to develop an in-depth study on a selected aspect of Māori performing arts.

Course Objectives:

To further develop skills and ability in kapa haka through practical application in all aspects of Māori performance including mōteatea (traditional chant), waiata-a-ringa (action song) as well as haka and poi.
