Design learning for diverse students
Designing for learning means to design with diversity in mind:
Be aware that our personal perception of life is one of many valid views, and reflect this stance in our design and facilitation. Balanced practices recognise differences and enable all students to access course content, participate in learning and demonstrate their knowledge and strengths. Our university is committed to equity outcomes for Māori students and priority equity groups, including Pacific students, students with disabilities, from refugee backgrounds and low socio-economic backgrounds, and those that experience gendered barriers to access and success.
Take the following steps (Beetham, 2013; Rogers, Graham & Mayes, 2007):
- Analyse and identify: Consider who your students are, their different preferences and resources, prior experiences, levels of digital literacies and independent learning, including digital information literacy, and learners' expectations. Consider what engages them at the level where they are learning, e.g. stage 1, in their first semester or in a later year.
- Recognise, decide and design: Once the gaps between course demands and students' abilities are identified, think about what learning is required, for example, through support that students can access. In short, teachers decide which of the differences are important to relevant learning and how to deal with it, for example by offering online resources or integrating Māori pedagogical practices and Ō Tātou Mātāpono, the Faculty of Arts Values.
- Respond: Reflect these differences in the overall course design and facilitation.
Designing with diversity in mind is based on the idea of making learning accessible for diverse groups of students. Acessibility is an important consideration when designing your Canvas course. The University of Auckland is committed to making all online content as accessible as possible and is bound by the following Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) guidelines Links to an external site.. Some practical ideas on how to achieve an accessible Canvas course are in this resource, Inclusive Design for Canvas
