About HEA Fellowships
Welcome to the Fellowship in Higher Education Helper pages for UoA staff!
This course is designed specifically to help staff who are looking to submit a fellowship application to HEA. The materials available in this Canvas course relate mainly to Associate Fellow (AFHEA), Fellow (FHEA) and Senior Fellow (SFHEA). Candidates for Principal Fellowship, please contact either Rhiannon or Marion for further resources beyond the ones in the Module.
The Advance HE website can be a pain to navigate - this Canvas course makes life easier by centralising all the documents into one place, plus there are some further resources that we found useful in the past and that helped candidates to structure their writing.
A selection of guidance documents and templates can be found under Modules which are taken straight from the Advance HE website
Links to an external site. for the most common Fellowship applications Fellow and Senior Fellow. For others (Associate Fellow and Principal Fellow) under the PSF 2023 please order your information pack directly from Advance HE.
All Advance HE Fellowship applications are now informed by the PSF 2023 (applications under the previous version of the PSF framework are no longer accepted.
One of the key challenges faced by many applicants is incorporating pedagogical research into their submission. In order to help with this, a reading list is available (please note that this list in the process of being updated) with some useful academic sources which you may want to use to supplement your reflections.
Feel free to start discussions and let us know if there is anything you think would be useful to add to the pages by emailing either:

Introducing Advance HE / HEA Fellowships
HEA Fellowships are embedded in UK Higher Education and have been adopted by increasing numbers of HE institutions globally, from the Americas to Australasia. A Fellowship demonstrates the personal and institutional commitment to professionalism in tertiary education at four different categories (AF, F, SF, PF). Individuals are recognized for their T & L practice, impact and leadership.
Advance HE is the new agency formed from the merger of the Equality Challenge Unit, the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. Teaching and learning is their key focus. The support and commitment to the HEA Fellowship scheme remains unchanged. Advance HE will also keep running and supporting a range of events, providing the opportunity to receive expert advice for applying for Fellowship, as well as training that can be used as evidence to support Fellowship applications.
Why apply for Fellowship?
Fellowship is increasingly sought by employers across the education sector as a condition of appointment and promotion. There are four categories from Associate Fellow (AFHEA), Fellow (FHEA), Senior Fellow (SFHEA) to Principal Fellow (PFHEA), demonstrating the various levels of T & L leadership with PFHEA being the highest, for example, at the level of Program Director or Associate Dean T&L.
Fellowship status brings you a range of benefits, for example:
- Consolidates personal development and evidence of professional practice in your higher education career;
- Provides a valuable measure of success and is increasingly recognised by international institutions;
- Demonstrates commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience, through engagement in a practical process that encourages research, reflection and development;
- For individuals, to identify their expertise with the entitlement to use post-nominal letters (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA, PFHEA);
- Provides institutional assurance that Fellowships are an important indicator that your institution is fully aligned with the UK Professional Standard Framework (UKPSF revised 2023) Download UK Professional Standard Framework (UKPSF revised 2023). For a detailed description of each of the dimensions with practice examples see the UKPSF Dimensions Download UKPSF Dimensions or NZ PSF Download NZ PSF or the Ako Aronui Download Ako Aronui (AUT, Auckland, NZ).
