Course Overview
A practical introduction to computing that will build confidence and familiarity with computers. Topics include: web design, game design, an overview of computer hardware and operating systems, effective use of common applications, using the Internet as a communication medium, applying programming concepts, and social implications of technology.
As part of their practical work, students will create web pages, and use a variety of home and office applications including word processing and spreadsheets.

Course Resources and Getting Help
Piazza is the main forum we will be using for asking and answering questions. This works well so you are encouraged to participate asking and answering questions there.
You are always very welcome to contact any of the teaching staff if you have any queries or concerns that can't be answered via Piazza.
Assessments and Pass Requirements
To pass the course, in addition to obtaining at least 50% overall, you must pass separately the theory component (test + exam) and the practical component (labs). The test (on Monday 24th January) is worth 20% of your final mark and the exam is worth 50% of your final mark so to pass the theory component you must obtain at least 35/70. The labs are worth 30% so to pass the practical component you must obtain at least 15/30 for your total lab marks.
Course Expectations
You are expected to attend all lectures (or watch the lecture recordings) before doing your labs. Lab attendance is compulsory. All labs are held in Room 303S-175 on Level 1 of the Computer Science extension to the Maths & Physics Building. There are two lab sessions each week - one on Tuesday and another on Thursday.
