Course Overview
A practical introduction to computing that will build confidence and familiarity with computers. Topics include: web design, game design, an overview of computer hardware and operating systems, effective use of common applications, using the Internet as a communication medium, applying programming concepts, and social implications of technology.
As part of their practical work, students will create web pages, and use a variety of home and office applications including spreadsheets, and databases.

Course Resources and Getting Help
Piazza is the main forum we will be using for asking and answering questions. In a large class like this it works well so you are encouraged to participate asking and answering questions there.
You are always very welcome to contact any of the teaching staff if you have any queries or concerns.
Assessments and Pass Requirements
To pass the course, you need to obtain at least 50% overall as well as getting at least 50% of the theory component (test plus exam) and at least 50% of the practical component (labs). The test (at 6:30pm on Wednesday 5th April) is worth 20% of your final mark and the exam is worth 50% of your final mark. The labs are worth 30% of your final mark.
Mid-Semester Test (5th April)
- Worth: 20% of your final mark and will be marked out of 100.
- Time: 6:30pm until 8:00pm (NZ Time) on Wednesday 5th April.
- Length of test: You have 90 minutes to complete the test.
- Material covered: Lectures 1 - 12 (inclusive) and Labs 1 - 4 (inclusive).
- Venue: The test will be held on campus.
- Test Room and Seat Number will be emailed to your university email address on Monday 3rd April by Angela Chang.
- Type of Test: The test will be on Inspera and will be a mixture of multi-choice and short answers.
- What you can take into the test room: You may take in a single A4 sheet of handwritten notes.
- Please practise using Inspera to answer test questions by doing the two practice tests which are available on Canvas under Assignments / Past Year Tests and Exams (for practice).

Course Expectations
You are expected to attend all lectures (or watch the lecture recordings) before doing your labs. All labs are held in Room 303S-279 on Level 2 of the Computer Science extension to the Maths & Physics Building. Attendance at labs is compulsory. 10% of each lab is for attendance.
If you are an offshore student, please ensure you watch the lab recording before doing the lab.
