This article is pretty heavy going, but have a scan and see what you can make of it Cross-Platform Users’ Experiences Toward Designing Interusable Systems - Dong-Hee Shin

Homework - do a bit of auto-ethnography (observe yourself). Note the following - what makes you choose the platform you will use for an app? Convenience, functionality, usability? When do to you abandon a platform for a task? What do you expect on different platforms? Keep a diary of your device usage for Monday (just one day!).

Remind yourself of the basics of Usability Studies... and if that is hard, do a google for "Simple Usability Testing"

In class you will develop a usability test plan for a cross-platform app.

Lecture 5 Comparative Evaluation Studies.

Please read the Research methods for human-computer interaction - (Chapter 1) in preparation for this lecture. In class you will have the opportunity to consider how to design a comparative study for a particular problem. It is a target acquisition task (ie clicking a button). Fitts' Law that we discussed last year is relevant. Remind yourself of Fitts' Law if you have forgotten. (this should be sufficient https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law)

Lecture 6 Programmers as users.

Please read Programmers Are Users Too: Human-Centered Methods for Improving Programming Tools - Brad A. Myers, Andrew J. Ko, Thomas D. LaToza, YoungSeok Yoon2016-7, in preparation for this lecture. In class you will have the opportunity to consider how to design and evaluate a program library and, in particular, it's user interface, known as the API (Application Programmer's Interface). While all libraries have an API - all programs have other programmers as 'users' - you know the statistics about how much initial time is spent programming something compared to how much maintenance time is spent on it over its lifetime.
