SCREEN 201: Storytelling for Screen

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A foundation-level core course in Screen Production introduces students to the conceptual and practical aspects of creating a narrative for screen. Through examination of various narrative forms and existing films both fictional and non-fiction, students will develop an understanding of the basics of cinematic narrative and how these ‘story ideas’ translate to the screen.

The course comprises of lectures, discussions, screenings, exercises and three key creative projects demonstrating lessons learned.  Assessment is based on participation and three practical assignments utilising the techniques learnt in lectures and workshops.

The course is broken into two major segments. The first half of the semester looks at constructing narrative in fiction and non fiction film. The second half of the semester we look at how the film making unit works as a team to bring these narrative to the screen culminating in a creative project.

Course Objectives:

  • students will understand the fundamentals of narrative storytelling for screen in fiction and non-fiction film making.
  • students will learn collaborative skills and ways to receive and provide constructive criticism
  • students will develop two written narrative assignments and one practical film making  project from concept to completion that expose them to the different techniques of cinematic storytelling

 Workload :           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study.
