Summary of Course Description:   

This course is a continuation of LINGUIST 200, and aims to gain a finer-grained understanding of certain crosslinguistic phenomena. In a discussion-based setting, we will explore selected topics such as Wh-questions, Case, Ellipsis, and Double-Objects in world’s languages.      

 Course outcomes:

A student who successfully completes this course will have the opportunity to:

  • Acquire knowledge about different syntactic phenomena in world’s languages
  • Apply their knowledge to carry out analyses in other languages
  • Acquire skills in report writing and critical thinking

Coursework Assessment and Exam Details: May be subject to change prior to the beginning of Semester.

2 Assignments 60% / Final Paper 40% 

Tentative Topics to be covered:

Wh-movement and associated restrictions; Case-typology and theory; Ellipsis; Verb-movement; Double-Objects; The DP-hypothesis.

 Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due.
