Summary of Course Description:   

Learning to read and write in the target language are key goals for many second language learners.  Not only do reading and writing play an important role in daily life but they are also of major importance in learning in school and university as well as workplace settings. This course examines factors, theories and processes in developing second language reading and writing. It include general topics in this field as well as more specific topics, such as learning academic writing and the role of digital literacy in second language reading. The course includes a focus on teaching practices related to the development of second language literacy.  Although course readings generally refer to the teaching of English as a second language, the content of this course is relevant to the teaching of other languages.

 Course outcomes:

A student who successfully completes this course will have the opportunity to:

  • acquire knowledge of factors, processes and theories related to the development of second language literacy and will apply this in considering teaching and learning situations
  • understand and plan teaching instruction 
  • acquire skills in academic writing, critical thinking, and academic literacy

 Workload and deadlines for submission of coursework:           

The University of Auckland's expectation is that students spend 10 hours per week on a 15-point course, including time in class and personal study. Students should manage their academic workload and other commitments accordingly. Deadlines for coursework are set by course convenors and will be advertised in course material. You should submit your work on time. In extreme circumstances, such as illness, you may seek an extension but you may be required to provide supporting information before the assignment is due. Late assignments without a pre-approved extension may be penalised by loss of marks – check course information for details.
